AI companion apps can become personal very quickly. A few conversations may contain routines, preferences, emotional context, photos, voice input and long-term memories. That makes the first setup session more important than it looks. Before relying on an AI companion regularly, users should review the settings that determine what the system can remember, how it can contact them and how much data it can access.
1. Review long-term memory before you start sharing personal details
Memory is one of the most valuable AI companion features because it helps the character maintain continuity across conversations. It can also create confusion if users do not know what is stored. Check whether long-term memory is enabled by default, whether memories can be viewed individually and whether they can be edited or deleted without resetting the whole account.
Also look for a difference between chat history and memory. Deleting a conversation may not always remove facts that were summarized into a separate memory system. A good product should make this distinction clear.
2. Check how your conversations may be used
Read the privacy controls around product analytics, human review and model improvement. Some services may use conversation data to improve the product unless the user opts out. Others provide separate controls for training and diagnostics.
If you plan to discuss sensitive personal information, business information or private relationships, these controls matter more than the quality of the character’s responses.
3. Set notification boundaries early
Proactive messages can make a companion feel present, but they can also become intrusive. Review whether the app can send relationship check-ins, reminders, promotions or re-engagement messages. If the product supports quiet hours or daily limits, set them before notifications become a habit.
The best companion experience is usually one where the user decides how active the character should be rather than accepting a single default frequency.
4. Limit camera, microphone and photo permissions
Only grant media permissions that match features you actually plan to use. A voice companion may need microphone access, but it may not need your full photo library. An avatar creator may need one selected image rather than persistent access to all media.
On mobile devices, system-level permission settings can often be changed later, so starting with the smallest reasonable permission set is a practical approach.
5. Understand relationship and personality controls
Some AI companion apps let users choose a relationship style, tone, role, level of intimacy or communication style. Review these settings instead of relying on defaults. A character that is configured as highly proactive, romantic or emotionally intense may feel very different from one designed for casual conversation.
It is also useful to know whether changing these settings resets the relationship or simply adjusts future behavior.
6. Review content and safety settings
Look for content filters, blocked topics, age-related restrictions and controls for potentially sensitive material. Users should not assume that every AI companion app applies the same safety rules.
For younger users or shared devices, these controls are especially important. Even for adults, content settings can help define the type of experience the user actually wants.
7. Make sure account security is strong
Use a reliable sign-in method and enable additional account protection when available. If the service supports Apple, Google or other identity providers, check which account is connected and how recovery works.
AI companion accounts can contain highly personal histories, so account recovery should not depend on a forgotten password or inaccessible email address.
8. Know how deletion works before you need it
Find the controls for deleting chats, long-term memory, generated media and the account itself. Subscription cancellation may also be separate from account deletion, particularly when billing is managed by the App Store or Google Play.
A trustworthy service should make it reasonably clear what happens to data after deletion and whether any information is retained for legal, security or operational reasons.
A five-minute setup can prevent long-term confusion
AI companions are designed to become more personalized over time. That makes early settings more important than they are in a typical utility app. Users should decide what the companion may remember, how it may contact them and what media it may access before the relationship becomes deeply personalized.
For a broader pre-subscription privacy review, see our AI Companion Privacy Checklist. The goal is not to avoid personalization. It is to make sure personalization happens within boundaries the user understands and controls.
