Deleting an AI companion account can be more complicated than uninstalling the app. A long-term companion may store conversation history, memories, generated images, voice assets, subscription information and linked login credentials. If the user deletes the account without checking these systems first, they may lose data they wanted to keep or assume information has been removed when it still exists elsewhere.

Start with recurring billing

Subscription cancellation and account deletion are often separate actions. If the subscription was purchased through the App Store or Google Play, deleting the account inside the app may not automatically cancel the store subscription.

Before deleting anything, confirm whether billing is handled by Apple, Google or the service directly. Cancel the recurring plan first and keep the confirmation if the renewal date is close.

Export conversations you want to keep. Long-term AI conversations can become a personal archive. If the service supports export, download important chats before deleting the account. Common formats include HTML, PDF, JSON or plain text.

Structured formats such as JSON are more useful if the user may later want to search, organize or migrate the conversation history. PDF is better for simple reading.

Review long-term memory separately

Chat history and memory are not always the same data. A companion may summarize important facts into a separate memory layer even after the original message is no longer visible.

Check whether the app provides a memory list or profile page. If it does, review the entries before deletion and confirm whether account deletion removes those memories as well.

Save generated photos and videos. AI companion apps increasingly generate selfies, avatar images and short videos. These files may disappear immediately when the account is deleted, even if the conversation export does not include them.

If any generated media matters to you, save it separately to your device before starting the deletion process.

Check voice data and voice-clone assets

If you uploaded a voice sample or created a cloned voice, find out how the service handles the source audio and derived voice model. Deleting the account should ideally remove the ability to generate new audio using that voice.

Some platforms may retain limited records for fraud prevention or legal reasons, so read the service’s deletion language rather than assuming every file disappears instantly.

Remove linked login methods after deletion. Accounts created with Apple, Google or social sign-in may leave an authorization relationship between the identity provider and the deleted service. After confirming the account has been removed, users can review connected-app settings on the identity provider and revoke access if it remains.

Check connected devices and sessions

If the app supports multiple devices, sign out of old sessions before deletion when possible. This is particularly useful if a phone, tablet or browser session is no longer under the user’s control.

Understand the deletion timeline. Some services delete immediately, while others use a waiting period. During that period, logging back in may cancel the deletion request. A waiting period can be useful for accidental deletion, but it also means the account may remain recoverable for some time.

Check whether the service distinguishes between deactivation and permanent deletion.

Keep proof of the request

If the deletion flow provides a confirmation email, reference number or completion message, keep it until the process is finished. This makes support easier if the account unexpectedly remains active.

What should be gone after deletion?. At minimum, users should understand the status of chat history, memory records, uploaded media, generated media, voice data, profile information and active subscriptions. If the platform cannot explain what happens to these categories, that is useful information about the service’s privacy maturity.

Before you confirm deletion, take one final inventory

A simple final checklist can prevent accidental loss: verify subscription status, download important conversations, save media, review memory entries, check voice assets, confirm linked accounts and note any deletion waiting period. If the service gives you an export archive, open it once before deleting the account to make sure the files are actually readable and include what you expected.

This extra step matters because an export that exists but is incomplete is not very useful after the account has already been removed. Users who rely heavily on an AI companion may also want to keep a short written summary of important preferences or relationship context that could help them rebuild elsewhere.

Deletion should be part of product quality. A good AI companion is not only one that creates convincing conversations. It should also give users understandable control over leaving. The easier it is to export, review and delete personal data, the easier it is to trust the service while using it.
